FAQs

  • 1. What kind of clients do you work with?

I typically support women between the ages of 20-40. I also support neurodivergent folks and highly sensitive people!

  • 2. What issues do you specialize in?

I work primarily with women navigating the complexities of early adulthood. This might look like struggling with self-esteem and worth, relationship challenges (romantic or platonic), life transitions, emotional overwhelm, or exploring your sense of identity.

  • 3. What's your approach to therapy?

Warm, collaborative, and real. I don’t believe in being a blank slate. I’ll show up as a human in the room with you. While I draw from evidence-based frameworks (like psychodynamic therapy, CBT. ACT, and mindfulness), our work will always be personalized to what you need.

  • 4. What does a typical session look like?

Every session is different depending on what you bring in, but you can expect a mix of deep exploration, practical tools, and gentle accountability. We’ll go at your pace. No pressure, no rush.

  • 5. Do you offer virtual or in-person sessions?

I currently offer secure video sessions to residents of Ontario and British Columbia, Canada.

  • 6. What are your rates? Do you offer sliding scale?

My standard rate is $160 per session. I reserve a limited number of sliding scale spots based on financial need. Feel free to reach out if this applies to you.

  • 7. How do I get started?

You can fill out the contact form or email me directly at tessa@shinementalhealth.co. I offer a free 15-minute consultation call to see if we’re a good fit. No need to prepare for the call!

  • 8. What’s your cancellation policy?

I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Late cancellations or no-shows will be charged the full session fee due to practice policy.

  • 9. Are you LGBTQIA+ affirming?

Absolutely. My practice is inclusive, sex-positive, body-neutral, and affirming of all identities and relationship structures (e.g. gender diverse, queer, ENM, etc.)

  • 10. Do I need to know what I want to talk about before starting therapy?

Not at all. You don’t need to have it all figured out. That’s what therapy is for. We’ll explore together.

  • 11. Are your services covered under insurance?

Yes, usually! Be sure to check your coverage plan for ‘psychotherapy’ or ‘counselling’. I will provide you with a receipt at the end of every session for you to submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.

  • 12. Are there taxes on psychotherapy serives?

Nope! As of June 20, 2024, most psychotherapy and counseling services provided by licensed professionals are tax-free in Canada. Including mine!
